Dispersion of nondegenerate nonlinear refraction in semiconductors.

چکیده
We use our recently developed beam-deflection technique to measure the dispersion of the nondegenerate nonlinear refraction (NLR) of direct-gap semiconductors. The magnitude and sign of the NLR coefficient n2(ωa; ωb) are determined over a broad spectral range for different values of nondegeneracy. In the extremely nondegenerate case, n2(ωa; ωb) is positively enhanced near the two-photon absorption (2PA) edge and is significantly larger than its degenerate counterpart, suggesting applications for nondegenerate all-optical switching. At higher photon energies within the 2PA regime, n2(ωa; ωb) switches sign to negative over a narrow wavelength range. This strong anomalous nonlinear dispersion provides large phase modulation of a femtosecond pulse with bandwidth centered near the zero-crossing frequency. The measured nondegenerate dispersion closely follows our earlier predictions based on nonlinear Kramers-Kronig relations [Sheik-Bahae et. al, IEEE J. Quant. Electron. 30, 249 (1994)].

Time-resolved Z-scan measurements of optical nonlinearities
We introduce a temporal delay in one beam of the two-color Z-scan apparatus, which measures nondegenerate nonlinear absorption and nondegenerate nonlinear refraction. This technique allows us to time resolve separately the sign and the magnitude of the nonlinear absorption and refraction at frequency p that are due to the presence of a strong excitation at frequency oe. For example, in semicond...
متن کاملDispersion of nonlinear refraction and two-photon absorption using a white-light continuum Z-scan.
We use a white-light continuum (WLC) Z-scan technique to measure the degenerate two-photon absorption spectrum and associated dispersion of the nonlinear refraction in ZnSe. The spectral components of the WLC source are separated by using a narrow band variable filter to minimize nondegenerate nonlinearities. We observe a change in sign of the ultrafast nonlinear refractive index around 0.7 of ...
متن کاملExtremely nondegenerate two-photon absorption in direct-gap semiconductors [Invited].
Two-photon absorption (2PA) spectra with pairs of extremely nondegenerate photons are measured in several direct-gap semiconductors (GaAs, CdTe, ZnO, ZnS and ZnSe) using picosecond or femtosecond pulses. In ZnSe, using photons with a ratio of energies of ~12, we obtain a 270-fold enhancement of 2PA when comparing to the corresponding degenerate 2PA coefficient at the average photon energy (ηω1 ...

We calculate the nondegenerate bound electronic nonlinear refractive index n2 ( w1; w2) (i.e., an index change at frequency w1 due to the presence of a beam at frequency w2) in semiconductors. We calculate this nonlinearity and its disper~ sion using a Kramers-Kronig transformation on the calculated nondegenerate nonlinear absorption spectrum due to two-photon absorption, electronic Raman and o...
متن کاملKramers-Kronig relations in nonlinear optics
We review dispersion relations, which relate the real part of the optical susceptibility (refraction) to the imaginary part (absorption). We derive and discuss these relations as applied to nonlinear optical systems. It is shown that in the nonlinear case, for self-action effects the correct form for such dispersion relations is nondegenerate, i.e. it is necessary to use multiple frequency argu...
